women empowerment

ARUDECS organises the tribal women into Self Help Group (SHG) to create a platform for them to meet regularly and carryout different socio-economic development activities. They start with regular monthly savings and avail small amounts of loans for various consumption and income generating activities. They repay the loans with lesser rates of interest in easy instalments in their groups. These SHGs provide them opportunity to save and acquire the habit of taking and repaying loans with financial discipline.

Once the SHGs mature enough to handle their own internal finances, they are assisted to open savings bank account in nearby commercial banks and initiate bank transactions. They are subsequently linked with the commercial banks and government sponsored subsidy linked lending programmes meant for tribal development.

Capacity Building

They are trained in handling the financial assistances obtained from government schemes like Tamilnadu Adi Dravidar Housing Development Corporation (TAHDCO), which is implementing Economic Development programmes. Bank loans are arranged with TAHDCO subsidy for self employment under Entrepreneur Development Programme (EDP), Self Employment Programme for youth (SEPY) Schemes. ARUDECS links these SHGs with THADCO and other commercial banks. It works with NABARD for ensuring financial inclusion and providing capacity building programmes for the SHGs on handling saving and credit programmes, record keeping, initiating income generating activities.

All the SHGs in the tribal villages have come together and promoted a federation in the name of “Subhiksham Tribal Women Federation”. The Federation facilitates financial services and other social-development programmes through the SHGs, it works with the mainstream institutions, district administration, banks and line departments to help SHGs avail government schemes and other entitlements.

ARUDECS has so far organised 350 tribal women from 30 villages into Self-Help Groups. In addition to offering financial services, these SHGs act as platforms for discussing their problems and addressing them collectively. They discuss on various health issues affecting adolescent girls, pregnant mothers and children in their SHGs and take-up appropriate preventive and curative healthcare activities with the support of ARUDECS.
